Duties & Responsibilities
The Electronics Shop Engineer is instrumental in supporting the educational mission of the SEAS/Physics Electronics Shop. This position requires strong knowledge of electrical engineering fundamentals as well as ample technical and fabrication skills to effectively support a wide array of student projects. The Electronics Shop Engineer will work extensively with individuals and teams of undergraduates, providing design feedback and technical assistance with their projects. The position also supports some administrative functions, such as managing the lab educational budget and spending, inventory, as well as maintaining appropriate and current protocols and standard operating procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise students working on Physics and Electrical Engineering course-related exercises, junior and senior design projects, as well as research-based design activities.
  • Mentor and advise individual and team-based extracurricular student projects. Enable SEAS and Physics engagement with various student design competitions.
  • Provide advanced technical and fabrication skills needed for developing a wide range of electronic research instrumentation for Physics and SEAS research labs.
  • Design and implement advanced educational and training workshops relevant to the shop educational and research-support mission.
  • Develop short and long term strategic plans to improve the shop's support capacity, including capital equipment and software acquisition.
  • Generate and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all shop equipment and instruments.
  • Lead relevant safety trainings/orientations for all shop users, including SEAS and Physics undergraduate and graduate students as well as course teaching fellows and assistants.
  • Serve as the lab point of contact for equipment troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair.
  • Prepare shop facility for periodic audits and inspections.


Additional duties and responsibilities may include the following:

  • Work with the Director of SEAS Safety Program and the Environmental Health and Safety department to help ensure a safe laboratory environment.
  • Work collaboratively with the SEAS Active Learning Labs to plan and develop effective support plans for student design projects.
  • Assist the Electronics Instrument Design Lab Manager with fabrication and development of custom electronic instruments as needed.


Additional Information

While this position does not have ongoing supervisory responsibilities, it is highly likely the successful candidate will be supervising interns and summer students.

Occasional night and weekend work may be required during peak academic periods.

Basic Qualifications

  • B.S. or advanced degree in Electrical Engineering or related field required.
  • A minimum of three years experience working in an electronics lab is required.


Additional Qualifications

  • An advanced degree or certification in Electrical Engineering or a related field, such as an PS or PE is preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge and skill working on typical EE software (e.g. Spice, Eagle) as well as basic proficiency with MS Office is preferred.
  • Strong electrical engineering and general science knowledge with specialization in one or more of the following areas (RF/microwave design, high-voltage and high-current design, low-noise/discrete analog design, lasers and optoelectronics, FPGA design) is essential for success in this position.
  • Strong organizational skills, creativity in problem solving, and high self-motivation are key to performing effectively in this position.
  • Experience working in both an industrial setting as well as an academic teaching environment is preferable.
  • Strong working knowledge of typical student project microcontroller/microprocessor platforms (e.g. Arduino, Raspberry PI, Beaglebone) is highly desirable.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. In particular, competence in generating straightforward technical documentation such as lab procedures, protocols, and reports is preferred.
